What should I watch out for when getting around by taxi or Grab?
At night, the basic rule is to use the ride-hailing app Grab. Street taxis and taxis touting by the roadside carry the risk of rigged meters or made-up, inflated fares. In crowded places like Bui Vien Street, walk a little away from the street to a well-lit spot before calling a car. The operator himself, on the way home from his first visit to Bui Vien, had someone grab his arm and get into his Grab with him. Before getting in, check that no one is following you. It's best to download and set up Grab while you're still in Japan.
