What specifically should I do to stay safe on a night out?
The main points are: (1) guard against pickpockets and bag snatchers (bag in front of you, don't walk while using your phone), (2) get around with Grab, (3) never follow touts, (4) never get involved with illegal drugs or buying sex, and (5) be careful about drinking too much and the ice at street stalls. Vietnam has heavy penalties for illegal activities, and foreigners can also face fines or deportation. When going out at night, take only the cash and credit card you need and leave your passport at the hotel.
