Beyond Bui Vien: an expat's guide to the hidden nightlife of District 2 and Thu Duc
In short
- Former District 2 (around Thao Dien) and the former Thu Duc City area are for repeat visitors who want a calmer, more grown-up night than District 1
- The classics are craft beer bars along the Saigon River, upscale villa-style VIP massage, and local beer clubs in Thu Duc
- Venues are far apart, so you'll need Grab to get around. Thao Dien is pricier, so prepare a bigger tip than in District 1
District 1 vs District 2 & Thu Duc
| Comparison | District 1 (Bui Vien, Le Thanh Ton) | District 2 & Thu Duc (Thao Dien, etc.) |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Lots of neon, crowded with tourists | Villas and greenery, resort-like feel |
| Customers | Tourists, Japanese business travelers | Western expats, wealthy Vietnamese, repeat visitors |
| VIP massage | Mostly large venues in buildings | Mostly villa-style |
| Getting around | Walkable | Mostly by Grab |

Xin chào! This is the Hapinam Editorial Team, bringing you nightlife and entertainment news from Vietnam.
I've lived in Ho Chi Minh City as an expat for a long time and am one of the team members who knows everything from the chaotic local energy to deep local information.
Recently, we've been hearing things like this from men who've been to Vietnam many times on business or holiday:
"I know all the bars in Le Thanh Ton (the Japanese quarter), and the noise of Bui Vien Street is getting a bit tiring at my age..."
"Isn't there an insider's nightlife spot for repeat visitors somewhere other than District 1?"
Leave it to us! For all you Vietnam regulars, what we most recommend right now is the nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City's up-and-coming areas: former District 2 (around Thao Dien) and the former Thu Duc City.
This time, from the perspective of the Hapinam Editorial Team, who actually live here, we explain the hidden, grown-up nightlife that's a little different from District 1's classic spots, along with suburban tips on getting around and paying.
- Why District 2 and Thu Duc are hot right now (how they differ from District 1)
- Where expats go: 3 hidden nightlife spots in District 2 and Thu Duc
- Hapinam's warning: suburb-specific precautions and how to avoid trouble
- Summary: enjoy the deeper side of Ho Chi Minh City's nights that only repeat visitors know!
Why District 2 and Thu Duc are hot right now (how they differ from District 1)

Former District 2, on the east side of Ho Chi Minh City – especially the Thao Dien area – is where many Western expats and wealthy people live.
*District 2 merged with District 9 and Thu Duc District in 2021 to become Thu Duc City. In the administrative reorganization of July 2025, Thu Duc City was also abolished and divided into 12 wards (phường). Thao Dien is now part of An Khánh Ward, but locals still often call it "District 2", "Thao Dien" or "Thu Duc", so we use those names in this article too.
Here's a table of how nightlife differs between classic District 1 (Bui Vien, Le Thanh Ton) and District 2 & Thu Duc.
| Comparison | District 1 (Bui Vien, Le Thanh Ton, etc.) | District 2 & Thu Duc (Thao Dien, etc.) |
| Atmosphere | Glittering neon, packed with tourists | Quiet villas and lots of greenery – a resort feel |
| Customers | Tourists, backpackers, Japanese business travelers | Western expats, wealthy Vietnamese, repeat visitors |
| Venues | Packed close together – easy to bar-hop | Many hidden venues in converted houses (villas) |
| VIP massage | Mostly flashy venues in large buildings | Villa-style venues with the feel of a luxury spa are the norm |
| Getting around | Easy on foot | Venues are far apart – getting around by taxi (Grab) is the norm |
Compared with District 1's chaotic, energetic nights, the big appeal of District 2 and Thu Duc is a private, sophisticated, grown-up night out.
Where expats go: 3 hidden nightlife spots in District 2 and Thu Duc

For those wondering what exactly you can do there, here are the kinds of places we expats go on weekends.
1. Riverside craft beer bars along the Saigon River
Thao Dien in District 2 is a treasure trove of stylish bars popular with Westerners. Along the Saigon River in particular, there are open-air bars where you can enjoy local craft beer while taking in the night view.
Unlike District 1, no tout will grab your arm here. It's the perfect grown-up start to the night: a quiet drink with good music.
2. Full-on resort vibes! Upscale villa-style VIP massage
This is the one the Hapinam Editorial Team most wants you to check out.
Unlike the venues in District 1's neon streets, many of the men's VIP massage places around District 2 are luxurious venues that look like an entire house with a pool (a villa) has been converted.
The size of the private rooms, the sauna facilities and the polish of the therapists are often a cut above District 1's local venues, making them hugely popular with VIP customers who want ultimate relaxation in a quiet setting.
3. Local energy at full blast! Huge beer clubs deep in Thu Duc
Go further past Thao Dien into the local areas of the former Thu Duc City and you'll find many huge beer clubs (beer halls with DJs) packed with young Vietnamese. Prices are local, not tourist prices like on Bui Vien, so you can soak up the real local energy – perfect if you want an insider's night out.
Hapinam's warning: suburb-specific precautions and how to avoid trouble

District 2 and Thu Duc have a different appeal from District 1, but being in the suburbs, there are things to watch out for. As a real warning from locals, stick to these three points.
1. Thao Dien is pricier! Watch the going rate for tips
Thao Dien, an area for Westerners and wealthy residents, has somewhat higher prices than the rest of Ho Chi Minh City.
So the going rate for tips at VIP massage and elsewhere also tends to be a little higher than at District 1's local venues (the ticket price plus a bit extra). To avoid arguments at payment time, keep in mind that this is an upscale area where tips are higher, and bring a little extra cash (Vietnamese dong).
2. Don't get stranded late at night! Always use Grab
In District 2 and Thu Duc, venues are far apart, so you can't just walk to the next one as in District 1. Also, late at night, taxis on the street become very scarce.
Always use the ride-hailing app Grab to get around. If you flag down an unlicensed taxi on the street instead, your chances of getting ripped off shoot up.
3. Legal and safety points (stay out of dark alleys)
Even in upscale residential areas, step into a side alley in Vietnam and you'll often find dim places with few streetlights. Wandering around alone late at night while drunk makes you an easy target for bag snatchers, so be careful.
Also, in Vietnam, buying and selling sex (actual intercourse) is strictly prohibited by law and can lead to a police crackdown. Stepping into a shady unlicensed venue tucked away in District 2 carries a serious risk of getting caught up in a raid. Always choose safe venues whose information is openly available, take responsibility for yourself, and never cross the line.
Summary: enjoy the deeper side of Ho Chi Minh City's nights that only repeat visitors know!

So, what did you think?
This time, we stepped outside classic District 1 to introduce the appeal of hidden nightlife in District 2 (Thao Dien) and Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City.
A blissful time at an upscale villa-style VIP massage or a stylish cocktail by the river will show you a new side of Vietnam.
Stick to the basic rules for the suburbs – arrange your transport (Grab), prepare cash (for tips), and follow the law and stay safe – and enjoy a smart, trouble-free night.
Everyone at the Hapinam Editorial Team is cheering you on from Vietnam and hopes your nights in Ho Chi Minh City become even deeper and more memorable!
